Lewes, East Sussex

Cross Construction has completed the development of a row of unusual town houses in the centre of Lewes in East Sussex. The new town houses have been built on one of Lewes’ many hills and have interesting rooflines utilising CUPA natural slates and Dorma windows to capitalise on the breathtaking views.

Lewes has always been a prosperous and thriving market town and its buildings boast a rich architectural heritage. It was therefore important that the developers took great care to ensure that the new town houses were sympathetic to and blended well with the historic surroundings. As such CUPA quarry 12 slates were specified on the roofs.

CUPA Slate is a natural product, which is extracted from its own quarries, hand split by skilled craftsmen and quality controlled at every level of the production process. CUPA 12, a grey slate with smooth matt surface, is particularly noted for its exceptional consistency of thickness and surface appearance and was specified for the project as the characteristics of this slate met all of the key requirements. Because slate is durable, waterproof and environmentally friendly, the tenets of sustainable construction are easily satisfied, and these attributes combine with a long lasting appearance that enhances any building.

Commenting on the new development Robin Cross from Cross Construction said,” Slate has a fantastic natural beauty, which was very important in this project. CUPA slate is really great to work with. The tiles always look great and there is never any problem getting them through planning. I would always use them and highly recommend them.”

Paul Farrier from Simmons Bros, the roofing contractor added,” CUPA is a great natural slate. We have been using the R12 slate successfully for over three years. You always know that you can rely on CUPA to provide a product which is consistently good.”

CUPA employs a number of quality controls throughout the production process to maintain the high standard of the slate produced. Testing is undergone for compliance with the British and European Standards including BS 680: Part 2 and the definitive and stringent french testing criteria. Before the slates are dispatched, they are classified by quality and type and then bar-coded and labelled so the history of the slate is recorded.

CUPA’s experience and quality of slate is recognised by the fact that one in every four slates used on roofs throughout the world is a CUPA slate. The 30-year guarantee is offered to all customers as a testament to the quality of the slate supplied and customer satisfaction.
